Corsham 27, Swindon 2nds 0

CORSHAM wrapped up a no-frills victory to preserve their unbeaten league record and move second in Dorset and Wilts Division One North.

Swindon's second string, joint top before kick-off, arrived with a 100 per cent record and a number of players with first-team experience.

But with their pack gaining the upper hand, Corsham took control in the early exchanges and only a combination of over-elaborate play and spirited counter work from the visitors held them at bay.

A driving maul broke the deadlock, No 8 Mick Mealing touching down after a concerted drive. Soon after, a flowing three-quarter moved stretched the Swindon defence, full-back Craig Avent created the overlap and wing Denzil Brockhurst won the foot race to score wide out.

The third score came when fly-half Haydn Brockhurst found loosehead Ed Minty, whose angle of running carried him under the posts. Denzil Brockhurst converted for a 17-0 lead at the break.

Swindon enjoyed a greater share of possession in the third quarter, but the home defences held firm and Brockhurst grabbed the all-important first score of the second half when he dummied his way through the cover.

The final try came when Avent released Gary Ings with an inside pass and the winger outsprinted the Swindon defences to score.

Corsham continue their league campaign tomorrow when they travel to Wootton Bassett 2nds.

Corsham 2nds 50, Bradford 2nds 0

CORSHAM'S second string hit the top of Dorset and Wilts Division Three West as they rattled up a half-century of points.

The result also made it seven wins from seven outings for the Corsham outfit.

The first score came after five minutes and was probably the best of the day. Bradford kicked deep into the Corsham 22, scrum-half Toby Powell gathered and ran it back. The ball went through several pairs of hands before flanker Martin Shepperdson finished it off under the posts. Further tries came from Tony Iacono, Rob Turner (3), Stu Moore, Matt Waymont and Greg Musto, with Kernan converting five. Corsham are home to Avonvale tomorrow.
