TROWBRIDGE racer Alan Blencowe could be just one chequered flag away from securing a drive in the British Touring Car championship.

Blencowe has won a test drive with the Seat racing team after speeding to second place and a £40,000 prize in the Seat Cupra Championship.

He will join three other drivers for the Seat test session, which will be held at a secret location some time in the next month.

There Blencowe will be hoping to recreate the form which saw him collect 10 podium finishes and six fastest laps this season.

If he impresses the Seat bosses, the 29-year-old could secure a drive in the 2007 Touring Car Championship, which is screened live on ITV.

Blencowe said: "It has been my ambition for a long time to become a paid Touring Car racer.

"I have been slowly climbing up the racing ladder in pursuit of that dream and now I have my chance.

"It will be a tough test session because the other drivers all have experience of Touring Cars, but I just want to get the car round the track in the quickest time possible.

"I don't even know when or where the test will be held yet, so I just have to sit tight and wait for the call from Seat."

Blencowe's career began seven years ago in the Stock Hatch Racing Championship when he drove a Peugeot 205 which cost just £600.

His stellar performances earned him drives for Alfa Romeo and Honda in the production class of the British Touring Car championships.

Blencowe hit top gear in 2005 with a fifth place finish in the Cupra Championship and he moved into overdrive this season.

A track record lap at the Knockhill circuit in Scotland was the highlight of an incredible 2006, which ended with another podium finish at Silverstone on Sunday.

He said: "This year has definitely been my best in racing to date. There have been so many highs and hardly any lows.

"The fastest lap was a great achievement because it means you go down in the record books, even if it's only for a short while.

"The Triple R team have put together a great car and I managed to take full advantage."

Blencowe finished the season with 222 championship points, just four behind 2006 champion Mat Jackson.

If he fails to land a Touring Car drive with Seat next season, the Salisbury-born racer is happy to have a third crack at the Cupra Championship.

"That's the back-up plan," he said.

"Seat have produced a new car for the 2007 season and the prize money is still the same, so I will happily race for a third season.

"I really want to test myself against the best drivers in the Touring Cars but that will all depend on how I perform in the test session."

Though Blencowe has no idea when that test will be, he has been preparing for the challenge in his own unique way.

"I've been playing the Toca Touring Cars game on the Playstation in my spare room," he said.

"It's nothing like the real thing but it looks very authentic. If I don't get a drive with Seat at least I can compete for them on the computer."
