WILTS SENIOR CUP

Warminster Town 3, Westside 0

WARMINSTER set up a mouth-watering second round clash with Trowbridge Town after easing past Westside on Saturday.

Manager Peter Russell will welcome his former side to Warminster on November 11, when he expects to see the biggest crowd of the season at Weymouth Street.

"It should be an exciting game," said Russell, who played for the Bees when they were in the Southern League.

"Trowbridge are flying in the Hellenic League this season. They've signed a few new players and things are looking good for them.

"They always take a good following wherever they go so this local derby should be well attended. I'm really looking forward to it."

Warminster sealed their safe passage into round two with a convincing 3-0 win over Westside.

David Watkins put the hosts in front after 35 minutes when he converted from close range after an excellent run from Louis Sparey.

Watkins was on target again after 55 minutes when he jumped well in the box to head beyond the Westside goalkeeper.

Sparey capped a superb individual display with a thumping finish from Tom Welch's cross.

Westside, who last season earned a home victory over Warminster in the Wiltshire League, were outplayed from the first whistle.

The visitors battled hard for 90 minutes but failed to break down the resolute Warminster defence.

"That was probably the best we have played so far this season," said Russell.

"I know Westside play in a lower league but everyone I spoke to after the game said we were excellent.

"Westside have even asked to come to us for a pre-season friendly next year, which shows how far we've come since moving to the Wessex League.

"Louis Sparey was a thorn in their side all afternoon. He gave Westside a torrid time.

"But I thought the whole team did very well - I decided not to give the man-of-the-match award to anyone because they were all superb."

Warminster return to Wessex League action tomorrow when they host lowly Liss Athletic, who have won just one of their opening nine league fixtures.

Russell will be without injured defender Ashley Wain, who is still struggling with a hamstring strain.

Greg Lewis is also unavailable.
