NEWLY-CROWNED European bronze medallist Danny Talbot believes he’s got his timing for the line spot on – now he just has to hope that British Olympic selectors agree.

Trowbridge's Talbot left last week’s trials in Birmingham downbeat after failing to make an impression in the 200m.

But he rebounded in style to win bronze at the Europeans in Helsinki, coming home in a time of 20.95 seconds as Holland’s Churandy Martina took gold and team-mate Patrick Van Luijk claimed silver.

Unfortunately for Talbot, who missed the first half of the season with injury problems, his finishing time was four tenths of a second outside the Olympic A standard.

That means that the 21-year-old will now have to rely on a discretionary spot if he is to be named alongside James Ellington and Christian Malcolm when officials announced their Team GB picks on Tuesday.

“I didn’t even get a medal at the trials so to come here and get one is a fantastic feeling,” said Talbot.

“This is the first time I have run in a senior championships so I was just hoping to get in the final, maybe see if I could make the top five so I'm elated with a medal.

“At the end of the day, even to be selected for the relay team in London will be a real honour, if I'm lucky enough to go in the 200m then I will be over the moon.”

Even if Talbot does miss out on selection for the individual 200m event, he stands a good chance of making the relay squad.

And the Birchfield Harrier admits that far from being a good fallback, the relay would be his preferred event, bringing as it does a much stronger chance of a medal.

“Realistically I would not be challenging the Jamaicans and Americans in the 200m if I were to be selected in that,” he added.

“So to go in the relay would be even better because we’ve got such a great tradition there.

“I'm more confident about the relay because I have been a part of the squad for the past 18 months, the 200m I got the A standard last year and have had some injuries this season.

“They might take that into consideration but it’s in the hands of the selectors now.”
