THE Wiltshire Times and Chippenham News-sponsored Team of the Week award for September 24, 2006, has been won by Division Four side Bromham (Sunday) FC.

There were no fewer than five teams in the running for this week's award. First Division clubs Atworth United, FC Colerne and Christian Malford and Third Division strugglers Somerford gave themselves a good chance of winning the award, but all four were beaten to it by Bromham (Sunday), whose 2-0 victory over AFC Melksham was judged the performance of the day.

There were three surprise results in Division One, with Christian Malford's 4-1 victory over leaders and previously unbeaten North Bradley one of the biggest shocks. Malford went into the game against the leaders on the back of two heavy defeats but stunned their opponents with goals from Ben Munns, Chris Pitman (penalty), Richard Bruce and a Leigh Trainer own goal. When Bradley did find the net the damage had already been done and Malford claimed a well earned win.

FC Colerne hosted high scoring Kings Arms (Trowbridge), who were without their talismanic star striker Scott Askew, and without him Kings Arms crashed to their first defeat of the campaign. But nothing should be taken away from Colerne, whose 6-2 win took them to the top of the table. Jamie Bowler and Jason Smith hit two goals apiece, with Gordon Allen and Charlie Spirrell adding the others.

Atworth United took a little bit of pressure of themselves at the foot of the table as they claimed their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Chippenham Sports and Social Club.

Atworth, who had lost their previous three games, took the lead through Scott Boyd and, although Chippenham drew level from the penalty spot, Atworth won the game with a penalty of their own which was calmly tucked away by 16-year-old Ian Jeffery.

Third Division strugglers Somerford picked up their first points of the season when they defeated promotion chasing Wheatsheaf FC 4-2. Somerford, who had lost 9-1 the previous week, responded to that defeat in fine style with a well deserved success. Alex Whitehall netted a hat-trick for the winners and debutant Phil Conrath added number four.

But it was Bromham (Sunday) that deservedly took the Team of the Week award for their 2-0 triumph over Division Four rivals AFC Melksham, who, until they met Bromham, had scored 37 times in five games, with the prolific Luke Ballinger claiming 20 of those goals.

Bromham's defence was solid throughout the 90 minutes, denying Melksham on numerous occasions. Bromham's win came with goals in each half, from Andy Bartlett and then 16-year-old Freddie Paget, whose second half contribution sealed Bromham's famous win.
