POWERLIFTING: TROWBRIDGE powerhouse Russell Glasscock added to his impressive haul of medals with two golds at the South West bench press and dead lift championships.

The 31-year-old welder, who trains at Scott's Gym in Melksham, proved too strong for his opponents in the 90kg weight category.

Glasscock won the dead lift competition with a lift of 210kg and came close to beating his personal best in the bench press.

His coach Sandra Smith was also in action in Gloucester.

Smith, 44, the World Masters record holder for both the clean and jerk, and snatch, took gold in the women's deadlift with a lift of 190kg.

Glasscock, who is still recovering from a long-term back injury, said he was pleased to come away with two golds but left slightly disappointed with his performance.

He said: "I was not overjoyed because I wanted a personal best in the bench press.

"Every time you compete you want to improve so it was frustrating that I failed the lift at 145kg.

"But the pain in my back has only just gone so it's about getting my confidence back now."

Glasscock said it was an inspiration to compete alongside Smith, who has been his personal trainer for the last six months.

"It's great to see how she prepares for competitions because she's a completely different person.

"The intensity level is so high and she really gets the crowd fired up.

"I'm quite a mild-mannered man really, but I need to learn to get some anger when I step onto the stage," he said.
