IT WAS a bad day for Trowbridge & District League sides in the Wiltshire Junior Cup, with only three from 10 making it through to the next round.

One of those, The Lamb FC, progressed to the last 16 without kicking a ball after opponents Bryon Wanderers withdrew from the competition.

The all-Trowbridge League affair between third division United FC and second division North Bradley was easily won by Bradley, who romped home by virtue of a thumping 7-0 win.

Goals from Nathan Flower and Craig Brown who scored from the penalty spot put Bradley two up at half time.

Jamie Young scored a second-half hat-trick with substitutes Jack Holdway and Ryan Baggs making up their tally.

Castle Combe 2 Box Rovers 4

BOX Rovers, who are currently top of the Wiltshire League first division, are one of the favourites for Junior Cup glory and visited Castle Combe, who won the competition back in 2005.

But there will be no repeat of that success for Combe as they fell at the first hurdle after the visitors triumphed 4-2, Sam Rowe and Matt White scoring in the second half for Combe.

DJC Marlborough 4 Semington Magpies 2

SEMINGTON Magpies gave a good account of themselves at DJC Marlborough, who are flying high in the Swindon & District League Premier Division.

But their best efforts weren’t good enough as they suffered a 4-2 defeat.

Dan Rimmer scored both goals for the Magpies who did really well as they played 75 minutes with 10 players.

Queensfield 2 Trowbridge Wanderers 0

SWINDON League outfit Queensfield United, who accounted for Freshford United in the previous round, hosted Trowbridge & District League first division leaders Trowbridge Wanderers and they had further success as they made the last 16 thanks to a 2-0 win.

Redlynch & Woodfalls 7 Calne Eagles 4

REDLYNCH & Woodfalls progressed into the next round, winning 7-4 at home to Calne Eagles in a match that was much closer than the final score suggests.

The away side undoubtedly came away disappointed to lose after coming back from 4-1 down to level at 4-4. But ultimately Redlynch’s pedigree shone through with three late goals to seal the win.

In the 48 hours prior to the match, Calne Eagles had three players pull out injured leaving them with only 12 available players.

This situation was exacerbated further when three members of the squad got lost on the way to the ground and did not arrive until after the game had kicked off.

Consequently, Calne played the first 10 minutes with only nine men, which also included club chairman Tim Storer, who put in a sterling performance at left back despite not playing for over two years.

Not surprisingly, Redlynch dominated the start of the game and it took only five minutes for them to open the scoring when Dave Hatch headed home from a corner.

On 10 minutes, Calne Eagles finally got back their full complement of players.

However, this did little to ease the pressure and Redlynch doubled their lead two minutes later from another corner, with the final touch coming off the shoulder of the away side’s left back Tim Storer.

Then after only 20 minutes played, the home side appeared to make the game safe when a Ben Britnell’s shot from just inside the box found the back of the net via a deflection off centre back Gareth Cook.

Calne were given a huge lift after 25 minutes when, against the run of play, their captain Stu Windsor scored with a superb shot from 30 yards out.

This goal seemed to settle the visitors and the game started to become more evenly balanced.

Nonetheless, Redlynch restored their three goal lead soon after, when good forward play from Hatch set up his strike partner Ben Read, who made no mistake from eight yards out.

Despite this setback, Calne still looked dangerous going forward.

They won a penalty after 37 minutes when Karl Sharratt was brought down in the box and his strike partner Adam Bewley made no mistake from the spot to bring his team back into the game.

Just before half time, Redlynch won a penalty themselves when right back Kevin Hamersley made what seemed to be a superb tackle inside the box, but was penalised instead.

Striker Ben Read took the penalty but saw his shot well saved by Andy Windsor, who also superbly kept out the follow-up shot from Ben Britnell.

Calne started the second half as the better team and they pulled another goal back after 52 minutes through an absolutely unstoppable free kick struck from 25 yards out by Windsor.

They then completed their comeback when a great cross from Karl Sharratt was forced home by at the back post by Sam Rogers.

Sadly, Eagles’ gallant performance started to catch up with them, and with 10 minutes left, pacy striker Read scored a quick-fire brace to complete a hat-trick.

Then in the final minute, centre back Julian Newman scored the game’s final goal after more good work from Read.

Despite all the drama and quality play, probably the most outstanding aspect of this match was the great sportsmanship shown by both clubs throughout the entire afternoon - a great advert for amateur football.

Seend United 12 Swindon Spitfires 0

SEEND United had an easy passage through to the next round after thrashing Swindon Premier division side Swindon Spitfires 12-0.

Mike Haines scored three of the 12. Carl Harfield, Charlie Waylan and Alex Fell scored two each. Singles from Ben Howe and Tom Bull along with an own goal made up the dozen.

Steeple Ashton 1 Oaksey FC 3

STEEPLE Ashton were thankful that they had home advantage against Cirencester League Division One outfit Oaksey FC who, after falling behind to a George Mortimer goal, struck back to claim a 3-1 win that made their journey back home a happy one.

The Wanderers 7 Worton & Cheverell 3

WORTON & Cheverell took a 3-0 lead at The Wanderers, who are currently second in the Salisbury League Premier division.

But Paul Spearing’s side were unable to claim a shock win as Wanderers fought back to claimed their spot in round three thanks to a 7-3 success.

A Martin Dickinson double and Jamie Sandy’s single gave Worton a dream start putting their three up inside seven minutes before Wanderers got into top gear, hitting seven unanswered goals of their own.
