GRAHAM SHADWELL missed out in his bid to add to his medal tally in the fours at the Atlantic Championships in Cyprus, writes DAVE EATON.
Trowbridge’s Shadwell, who plays outdoors for Spencer Moulton, had struck gold in the first week with triples partners John Hick (Clevedon, Somerset) and Jamie Chestney (Hunstanton, Norfolk) Shadwell teamed up with the Reading (Berks) duo of Mark Bantock and Robert Newman, with whom he won Commonwealth Games triples bronze last year, and and Hick in the men’s fours.
Unbeaten after five matches, they topped the table beating Netherlands (25-9), USA (28-11), Israel (24-5) and Spain (19-9) and drawing with Canada (13-13).
But in their final group game they lost 19-16 to lowly Jersey, only the Channel Islanders’ second win, and were edged out for top spot by Israel!
Shadwell and co then crashed 21-9 in the play-offs to Wales, missing out on a semi spot and medal.
Shadwell did have some consolation, England’s bowlers claiming both men’s and women’s overall team gold.
Shadwell will now turn his attentions in this country to the indoor game with the Clarrie Dunbar club.
Dunbar’s ladies, including Shadwell’s wife Debbie, clinched a 39-20 win over Bristol in the Lingford Trophy – the U60s club national knockout competition – and will play Desborough from Berkshire on November 20.
In the men’s club regional competition, the Wessex League, Dunbar defeated Purnells, of Paulton 99-50, for a 14-2 points win.
They play Bristol on November 20.
