MELKSHAM Town caretaker boss Steve Burns praised the attitude of his players after they sprang an upset in the FA Vase by beating Wells City last weekend.

Gary Higdon’s extra-time header sealed victory for Melksham over their Toolstation League Premier Division opponents at the Conigre, setting up a trip to Wessex League outfit Christchurch in the second round proper on November 19.

“To be honest, we really went for it and the attitude from the lads was spot on,” said Burns.

“It was a good performance and we had a good crowd there, which was good to see.

“The lads have given me all the support that I needed so far and we’ve got a great bunch here.”

Steve Murray latched onto a misplaced pass from Melksham’s Stu Greener to put Wells a goal up early in the second half.

In the 89th minute, Melksham levelled the scores and forced extra-time when substitute Matt Cooper rose to head home Dave Percival’s corner.

The visitors went down to 10 men shortly after when Mark Randall was shown a straight red for abusive language towards the match official before striker Higdon popped up in the 115th minute and looped home a header to send Melksham through.

Burns’ side will be without Cooper, who is suffering from an ankle injury, when they travel to local rivals Westbury United in the Toolstation League First Division tomorrow.
