Victories in their first two matches of the season for Heytesbury proved to be a false dawn as the villagers have won just once in five since their promising start.
But a clash with fellow villagers Bratton gave them the chance to get their campaign moving in the right direction. For that to happen, Anthony Edgar’s side would have to end their four-match losing run at the hands of Paul Flanagan’s men and they did just that with a thrilling 5-4 victory.
After Darren Clements put Bratton in front early on, Heytesbury could have been forgiven for thinking ‘here we go again’ but unlike previous matches, Edgar’s side dug deep and restored parity through Stuart Beggs, however the score line didn’t stay level for long as a second from Clements handed the lead back to Bratton.
Leigh Kennedy, so many times a Heytesbury hero, fashioned an equaliser for the home side and just before half time, Sam Sweetman put them 3-2 ahead.
Heytesbury made a blistering start to the second half and opened up a two goal lead thanks to Kieron Edwards and when a second from Beggs, which was hotly contested by Bratton as they didnt believe that the ball had crossed the line it.
Chris Storey got it back to 5-3 and Bratton switched to all out attack - they managed to score a fourth thanks to a second of the game from Storey but despite all their efforts to get a draw from the game, came up just short as Heytesbury held out to claiming a thrilling win.
Boomsbury 5 FC Northbridge 0
It was top verses bottom in division one at North Bradley where Ben Howe’s early pacesetters Boomsbury entertained basement side FC Northbridge. Boomsbury may have won 5-0 but poor finishing, brave defending and some brave goal keeping from the visitors keeper Mark Binns somehow kept the home team from hitting double figures.
Despite their dominance, Boomsbury led just 1-0 at half time thanks to a Scott Askew goal. They had a chance to double their lead before the break but they were denied when keeper Binns was at full stretch as he brilliantly kept out a Richie Bliha penalty.
Boomsbury finally scored a second 10 minutes into the second period via a second of the afternoon from Askew. Neil Hannaford made it 3-0 and the game was put to bed when Askew completed his hat trick to make it 4-0. John Baker planted the ball home for goal number five.
Pete Spong wasted the chance to add a sixth for the home when he saw his penalty saved by Binns who could only knock the spot kick back to him but his second bite of the cherry saw him blast over the bar from 10 yards out.
Calne Eagles 0 North Bradley 3
After their 5-1 loss to fierce rivals and league leaders Boomsbury last weekend, North Bradley got back to winning ways with a hard fought 3-0 win against Calne Eagles.
Throughout the entire match North Bradley’s extra quality was evident as they dominated possession. However, not for the first time, Calne Eagles managed to raise their game against strong opposition and Bradley found chances hard to create.
Indeed, the first real chance of the first half fell to the home side after 20 minutes.
A loping cross from Adam Bewley found both Brett Cullen and Kevin Hamersley unmarked in the six yard box, but unfortunately with the goal at their mercy, they managed to get in each other’s way and somehow the ball was headed over the bar.
Shortly after, North Bradley took the lead when a free kick into Calne’s the box caused confusion as centre back Roy Wenham and keeper Andy Windsor both waited for the other to clear the danger.
In the scramble that followed, Craig Brown forced the ball over the line from close range.
North Bradley continued to press forward and Eagles’ keeper Andy Windsor made smart saves from both strikers Craig Brown and Liam Richards.
Bradley’s veteran midfielder Tim Richards then crashed a shot against the crossbar from ten yards following a great passing move.
Despite being under great pressure, Calne always looked dangerous on the break during the first half and their pacy striker Karl Sharratt often had the North Bradley backline stretched.
At half time, North Bradley brought on recent signing, prolific striker Jamie Young.
Nonetheless, they still found chances difficult to create and when they did get shots on goal they found keeper Andy Windsor in fine form.
Craig Brown came closest to doubling their lead after 65 minutes when his flicked shot from close range hit the post before being cleared to safety.
With 10 minutes left, Calne were forced to take risks in order to try for an equaliser.
But they were punished almost instantly, as Young broke free on the right wing and crossed the ball for Brown, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Calne still pushed forward and Sharratt and Stu Windsor both saw good shots blocked.
In the final minute, with Calne running on fumes, Young scored his first goal for North Bradley when he fired home from 12 yards out to complete a hard earned 3-0 win.
Warminster Town Reserves 3 Worton & Cheverell 2
With four wins apiece from their seven matches so far this season, fourth placed Warminster Town Reserves and Worton & Cheverell, who started the afternoon in third spot, played out a nail biter at the Town’s Weymouth Street Ground.
Two goal keeping errors from the Worton shot stopper gifted Warminster a 2-0 lead in the opening 30 minutes, with Nick Shuttlewood benefiting from both mistakes.
Shuttlewood put Warminster in front on 20 minutes when his 30-yard free kick found it’s way under the body of the visitors keeper and 10 minutes later, from even further out, Shuttlewood fired home another free kick that was misjudged by the keeper.
Worton rallied and were on level terms before half time, Darren Clements reduced the arrears when he fired home from the penalty spot and just before half time Myles Hickton made it two apiece.
Warminster’s manager Andy McFarran made a few second half substitutions and it was Jason Stokes who replaced top scorer Chikiah Scassie who proved to be the ace up his sleeve - Stokes played in Shaun Sheppard who slotted home what proved to be the winner.
Worton had chances to get something from the game, the best of which fell to Myles Hickton, who after weaving his way around four defenders, blasted a fantastic shot again the bar and so it remained 3-2 to Warminster.
