Steve Burns will concentrate on the job of guiding Melksham through the next few weeks in a caretaker capacity as the club’s hierarchy make a decision on a replacement for the departed Adam Young.

Conigre chief Young stepped down last week because of increasing work commitments, leaving Burns in temporary charge for the first time in Saturday’s derby draw with Devizes.

Burns oversaw the reserve team’s treble league and cup-winning campaign in the Trowbridge & District League last season, but will wait to hear whether the club want him to become Young’s permanent replacement.

“It (the job) is not something I’ve ever really thought about and I won’t unless it is offered to me outright,’’ said Burns.

“I would make my mind up then. If I don’t get it then I would go back to working with the reserve team.

“I’m doing the job for a couple of weeks to start with, until they have made their minds up.

“I’m sure plenty of people have been putting their names forward for it, so we’ll just wait and see what happens.

“It was disappointing that Adam had to leave because I had worked with him well for a year, but I know most of the lads at the club.’’

Skipper Dave Thompson bagged his third goal in successive matches to earn the home side a point in Saturday’s derby draw.

Adam Heath had given Devizes the lead just after the quarter-of-an-hour mark.

Burns added: “It was always going to be a tough game because we had beaten them 4-0 (in the Wiltshire Senior Cup) the previous week.

“We did well in the first half, but in the second, Devizes set their stall out.’’ Melksham host Toolstation Premier strugglers Wells City in the first round proper of the FA Vase tomorrow.

Town are hoping that defenders Ian Jeffrey and Jamie Oliver will shrug off injuries to play a part.
