DANNY Talbot’s excellent season has been recognised by UK athletics chiefs in the most useful way possible – with more cash.
The 20-year-old Trowbridge Tornado has been promoted from UKA’s Futures Programme into the World Class Development Programme (WCDP) for 2011/12, the season of the 2012 London Olympiad.
The decision follows Talbot’s third place in the Spar European Team Championships on his senior British international debut, fourth place in the European U23 Championships and then selection for the GB relay squad that went to South Korea for the World Championships.
“I am really pleased with that decision,” said Talbot.
“I’m not sure how much it is in terms of financial help but of course it is more money for myself and Dan Cossins (coach) and that is always a help.
“But it also means better support from the sports science people at Bath University and greater access to the physios as well which is really good.
“Getting that sort of support is recognition of the hard work that Dan and I have been doing and hopefully we can keep the good work going.”
The package will certainly help the two Dans as they lay the foundations over the hard winter months for their bid to qualify for the British squad next summer. But even before then Talbot revealed that the new deal has an unexpected bonus.
“We have been told that we will get five sessions to train in the new Olympic Stadium starting in December and then further sessions in February, March, April and May,” added Talbot.
“I had the opportunity to get a look at the site with the Futures Programme but it wasn’t even built then. Going to see the stadium now that it has been built should be really inspirational.”
