MELKSHAM got off to a flyer in their Vase quarter final when two minutes into the game, Scott Davies followed up his man of the match performance last week to open the scoring with a well-worked try from the back of a ruck near the posts.
Andy Stone converted and minutes later, following a scrum, the ball was moved wide to Phil Williams who powered over in the corner.
Wimborne hit back with a slick move down the blindside and converted and Melksham were guilty of missed tackles when the visiting winger went over wide out.
But they responded well when Davies went in for his second and with Stone converting the game was nicely poised at 19-14.
Melksham kept the pressure on and were rewarded when the busy Ben Dudridge streaked in and Stone converted to leave them 26-14 ahead.
Wimborne kicked a penalty but Melksham’s willingness to run the ball from their 22 backfired when a pass went astray and the visitors mopped up the loose ball and scored wide out.
This was converted and Wimbourne scored again straight from the restart when a sweeping move the length of the pitch was rewarded with a another try.
The successful conversion meant Wimborne had the lead for the first time at 31-26, but with two minutes to go Melksham looked like they had forced extra time when they equalised with a neat try from man of the match John Cox.
However, a lapse of concentration in the defence let in Wimborne with the last play of the match to clinch victory.
