AFTER making a great start to the season by winning their opening four games of the season, FC Calne saw their bubble burst as they suffered a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Melksham Town A, whose win was sweet revenge for their 4-1 loss earlier in the season.

Melksham gave themselves the perfect start by taking the lead through Bradley Butcher, but their joy was shortlived as Steve Wordley cancelled out Butcher’s effort to draw Calne level.

The hosts then took the lead through Nick Benson but they were unable to take in into the break as a fine finish from Leigh Rogers tied the score at two each.

Melksham sealed their victory when Jack Morris bagged what proved to be the winner 10 minutes into the second half.

Calne battled bravely, but their efforts were hampered by the dismissal of George Bettles who was shown a red card for violent conduct.

Polenez Westbury 0 Westbury United A 14

A WEEK after Polenez Westbury were beaten 15-0 by Dave Tucker’s Westbury United A, the two teams went head to head in the reverse fixture and once again it was Tucker’s side who were victorious after romping to another crushing success - this time winning claiming a 14-0 success.

Like last Saturday Westbury opened up a 7-0 first-half lead thanks to goals from Kieren Nunn who opened the scoring, Marc Lanfear added number two before Jack Hayward got in on the act.

A second from Nunn made it 4-0.

Mitch Spackman and Ian Young added thier name to the score sheet before a second from Lanfear completed the first-half scoring.

The second half saw Westbury hit seven more unanswered goals, Marc Lanfear completed his hat-trick, Jordan Matthews scored his first of the season and Ian Young netted his second of the game.

Steve Perkins scored number 11 prior to Ian Young adding number 12 which saw him seal the second treble of the game.

Two further goals from Matthews saw him complete a hat-trick and Westbury’s scoring on another bad day for Polenez who have now conceded 101 goals in seven league and cup matches.

The Lamb FC 6 Bradford United Reserves 1

AT THIS stage of the season last term, Trowbridge side The Lamb had managed to pick up just four points from a possible 18.

A year on and with Richard Stevens now in charge there has been a dramatic reversal in form for the former whipping boys who, after their latest 6-1 victory over Bradford United Reserves, are serious title contenders as they sit pretty at the top of the table with maximum points from their seven games to date.

The Lamb may not have been at their best in the first half as Bradford did well to stay with their hosts at the Stallards, who only had a Sam Stevens goal to show for their efforts.

Lamb were given a wake-up call early in the second half as Bradford drew level with Darren Brewer restoring parity but that seemed to spur the Lamb on and once Bradley King-Taylor had regained the lead for the Lamb it was one way traffic as the hosts scored at regular intervals to kill the game.

A second from Sam Stevens made it 3-1, Ryan Underwood added number four with Craig Sheppard and Tom Parr’s 25-yard wonder volley completed the leaders half dozen.

Referee Andrew Harding had a fine match in the middle.

Westbury Town 6 Bratton Reserves 0

WESTBURY Town may have made a slow start to the season but they are playing catch up in fine style.

Due to pitch problems Westbury never got their campaign underway until three weeks after everyone else had started.

However their meeting with local rivals Bratton Reserves was their fifth game in as many weeks and probably produced their best result to date as they claimed a convincing 6-0 win.

Steve Martin’s magnificent strike put Westbury ahead and from then on it was downhill for Bratton who fell further behind as goals from Daryl Maxwell and Luke Smith gave Westbury a 3-0 interval lead.

Three more goals in the second half and Tim Beechem’s sending off after picking up second booking ensured the day ended in disappointment for Bratton who succumbed to second-half stikes from Maxwell and Smith who took the tally to two for the afternoon. Jamie Howse made up Westbury’s half dozen.

Westwood Social Club 4 The Stiffs 1

AFTER picking up their first win of the season last weekend The Stiffs travelled to Bobbin Lane hoping to get at least a point from their game with hosts Westwood Social Club who, after suffering a surprise loss against Bratton Reserves last weekend, were wary of another upset.

However Ben Cowdrey’s hosts, who had already beaten their guests 4-0 earlier this season, raised their game and picked up maximum points from their 4-1 success.

Westwood led 2-0 at half time thanks to goals from Tom Downes and Sam Simpson.

Downes hit the target again in the second half and a first goal for the club from Jamie Gould saw the hosts open up a 4-0 lead and put the game to bed.

Dave Carroll scored a consolation for the Stiffs 10 minutes from time to deny Martin Cowdrey a second clean sheet against Adie Giles side.
