HILPERTON’S Tom Fisher (Avon Valley Runners) finished third overall in the Swindon Half Marathon in 1:13:59 to be crowned county champion behind two time winner Dave Roper of Cheltenham Harriers and Jonathan Stead of London’s Herne Hill Harriers.
Martin Chorley of Warminster Running Club was first in the male vet 50 category, while Avon Valley (Fisher, Thomas Coney and Mark Harris) were second behind Swindon Harriers for the team prize.
Diane Hier of Warminster Running Club finished second in the ladies race to win the county title as well as the female vet 40 crown.
l THE Howorth brothers from Hilperton enjoyed impressive victories at the opening Gloucestershire Cross Country League race at the Cotswold Farm Park.
John Howorth (Team Bath AC) continued where he left off last season, when he won three of the U11 races and was second in the other to claim the overall title, by winning the U13 boys’ race.
The 11-year-old St Augustine’s Catholic College student also led Team Bath to second in the team race with support from fellow St Augustine’s runner Henry Dixon, who was fourth and Jake Burkey in 19th.
Younger brother Rory, still only aged nine, raced to victory in the U11 boys’ race, the St John’s Junior School pupil finishing 25 seconds clear of his nearest rival.
There was also a victory for 15-year-old St Laurence School pupil Alex Carter, from Winsley, in the U17 men’s race.
