WINSLEY fencer Sophie Williams will have to put her faith in her teammates if she is going to leave her debut World Championships clutching silverware.
The 20-year-old, who reached the last 32 at the European Championships in Sheffield back in July, bowed out in the round of 64 in Catania, Italy.
Williams, based in Truro, hit the ground running, winning three of her pool fights and a direct elimination bout against Mexico’s Uraula Gonzalez 15-14 to reach the final 64.
But the former Millfield School pupil’s adventure ended as she lost 15-7 to Azza Besbes from Tunisia, her conqueror going on to reach the top-16 stage.
Williams is set to take part in Saturday’s sabre team event alongside Chrystall Nicoll, Louise Bond-Williams and Joanna Hutchinson.
