ENGLISH middleweight champion Nick Blackwell is determined to right the wrongs from his first professional defeat when he steps back into the ring in Swindon next month.
The 20-year-old from Trowbridge, who suffered his first loss in June’s British title showdown with St Helens’ Martin Murray, will box on a bill at Swindon’s Oasis Centre on Friday, September 30 against an as-yet unnamed opponent over six rounds.
‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell was forced to retire on his stool at the end of the fifth round of his televised bout with Murray in Wigan after aggravating a rib injury he had sustained in training.
Despite that loss to a vastly more experienced fighter, the Wiltshire man still holds the English belt and is focussing on learning from what was a maiden loss in only his ninth fight.
“I can’t wait – straight after the fight I was buzzing to get back in the ring,’’ said Blackwell.
“I was a bit gutted because I went in with an injury that occurred two weeks before the fight and he knew about it as well, and obviously I lost.
“I regret it because I lost my (winning) record from it, but on the positive side I learnt a lot, like never to go into a fight with an injury.
“It’s all about getting better and hopefully learning from your mistakes.’’ Blackwell will box on an Oasis bill headlined by an international Masters fight for Swindon middleweight Kelvin Young against Birmingham’s Tony Randell.
