ENGLAND opener Marcus Trescothick made his comeback at Taunton on Saturday against a West of England Premier League X1 led by Corsham skipper Neil Shardlow.

Trescothick, who seven weeks ago quit England's tour of India because of a virus, made a quick-fire 74 before he was stumped by the former Wiltshire gloveman Shardlow in the 40th over. Shardlow, whose other victims included opener Matt Wood and promising youngster James Hildreth, said he felt privileged to captain the league team against a county side.

He said: "I thought Somerset would put out their academy side but then Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Caddick walked through the door. "Somerset have just come back from a winter tour of Cape Town and this was the first time I'd put on the gloves." Shardlow was satisfied with his own performance, despite dropping Trescothick off Keith Parsons, who was guesting for the league side.

He said: I was pleased with the stumping and I thought I had Marcus out earlier with an even better take, but the square leg umpire didn't agree." Saturday's game was abandoned as a draw after Somerset had amassed 293-7 in their 50 overs.

On Sunday, Shardlow led club side Corsham to a 25 run win over Wiltshire in a friendly match at Station Road. South African Chris Peyper top scored for the hosts with a patient 36 on a typically slow wicket.

Jon Chandler made 40 and Eddie Abel struck 38 in Wiltshire's stuttering reply of 157 all out.

John Parker took three for 34 for Corsham.
