PRIDE, passion, commitment. Three words you would not normally associate with a team lying 16th in the twilight of another disappointing league season.
But Biddestone manager Graham Learmonth insists he will settle for nothing less from his players as they fight for their futures at Yatton Road next year. On the face of it, 11 wins from 38 games represents a mediocre campaign at best, but one more victory before April 29 and Biddestone will double their points total from last year.
Learmonth has challenged his players to take six points from their four remaining league fixtures, starting with victory over Longwell Green last night. He said: "All the players have said they want to be involved next season. Nobody has switched off or made any excuses why they can't play.
"Some of the lads have a Sunday cup final with Biddestone Social to look forward to, but it has not affected their league performance." By stark contrast, Saturday's opponents Wellington looked anything but interested in a one-sided encounter at Yatton Road.
Learmonth said he was surprised by the lack of effort displayed by the Somerset side, adding: "Some of their players are in their late 20s and early 30s and probably have their minds on another club.
"Some sides tend to pack it in at this stage of the season. If you have a go at them there's always a chance you will turn sides over." Joe O'Chuko put Biddestone in front with a cheeky back-heel from Tim Tasker's downward header. O'Chuko scored his second of the game minutes after the restart with a clinical finish from close range after rounding the goalkeeper.
Adam Taylor sealed the points for Biddestone with a deflected shot 10 minutes from time.
Learmonth said afterwards: "If you had one of those Sky TV statistics machines it would probably have told you that we had about 80 per cent of the possession.
"The game should have been won by half-time and in the end it could have been five or six nil.
"It was a terrific performance from all the lads," he said.
