WESTBURY rattled the aristocrats of Ilfracombe on Easter Monday with a whirlwind performance at Marlborough Park.

Manager Paul Brickley said he was delighted with the response of his players after the dire showing at Almondsbury on Saturday.

He said: "I thought we were outstanding and should have won the game. The attitude of the players was top-drawer.

"We were by far the better side. Ilfracombe are a well-supported club and their fans were amazed at how a team of unpaid kids could compete with their side, who have a wage bill of £1,200 per week."

Wayne Wheeler fired the visitors in front after just six minutes when he latched onto Tarick Yachou's flick and beat the flat-footed Steve Oliver from 20 yards. Wheeler thought he'd doubled Westbury's lead after 29 minutes when he prodded the ball over the line, but the striker's effort was ruled out for offside.

An injury to James Dowd forced a reshuffle after half time, but there was no less determination from the Westbury youngsters. David Thompson and Luke Smith excelled in the full-back positions to keep home wingers Karl Madge and Dan Robinson at bay.

Barry Yeo twice went close to equalising for Ilfracombe before Lee Morgan denied Lee Langmead with a brave goalline clearance.

Westbury always looked dangerous on the break and Oliver did superbly to deny Wheeler with a brave stop at the striker's feet. The equaliser came with nine minutes remaining when Westbury failed to clear a Madge corner and Shaun Lewis pounced to hook the ball into the net.
