GOLF: THE Lafarge Golf Club is to open to non-members for the first time. The club, close to the cement works in Westbury has been closed to non-members, unless invited, for over 25 years.

But thanks to the present committee the club is now open to play-and-pay golfers for the first time. It is now open to all who wish to visit. There are nine holes which present golfers of all standards a challenge to their skills.

A full round of 18 holes consists of four par three holes, two par fives and 12 par fours. The course is 5,200 yards long from the tees and has some of the best greens in Wiltshire.

With ditches, hedges, out of bounds on many holes plus the bunkers a good score is an achievement to be proud of.

The course is flat and so ideal for the older golfer who wishes to have a gentle round without too much effort. Those who are interested in playing golf are welcome, from the novice to the handicapped player and this includes juniors who are given tuition on Wednesday evenings under the guidance of the club's junior organiser and club professional.

Lessons can be arranged with the professional by ringing the numbers provided in the starters hut. The club has a few memberships left and would accept people who have played the course and enjoyed what they have found. The social club opens lunch times and evenings and has a snooker table.
