Wiltshire continued their fine form in the MCCA Trophy with a 53 run victory over Cornwall at St Austell on Sunday.
The win sees the county their group in first place and secure a home draw in the quarter final, which will be played on Sunday June 14th at Corsham. Devon finished as runners-up in the group.
Winning the toss for the third consecutive time in the competition, Wiltshire had no second thoughts about batting and set a very competitive score of 289-6 wickets in their 50 overs.
The innings started with an opening stand of 53 in just 6 overs between Joe Breet (66) and Tom Morton (20). When Morton was out Ben Walker (25) and Breet put on 61 for the second wicket.
Breet was third out with the score at 148 and then Greg Lamb (74 not out) was joined by James Hayward (47) and they put on 84 for the 4th wicket before the innings closed at 289 for 6.
Cornwall needed to win the match in 43 overs to overtake Devon into second place in the group, but after Alex Senneck’s opening burst (3 for 40) this seemed unlikely.
At 145-7 the match was nearly over, but Cornwall refused to lie down and a spirited counter attack, led by Gavin Edwards (50 not out), took the score to 236 all out in the 40th over.
For Wiltshire Greg Lamb took 2-61, Ben Walker 2-62 and Michael Coles 2-28.
Wiltshire’s next match is their first three-day Minor Counties Championship match against Wales at Usk on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday June 7/8/9th.
James Hibberd returns to captain the side after his wedding and leg spinner Pat Turk comes into the side in place of the unavailable Alex Senneck and James Golding.
