Cricket: Trowbridge's spin kings proved the difference as they returned to form with a nail-biting victory over Bristol West Indians.
Captain Peter Hickerton had been critical of his side’s performance in their previous loss to Cheltenham but was impressed with all areas of their display on Saturday.
After making an imposing 228, the game appeared to be slipping through their fingers when the visitors got off to a rapid start.
However the trio of Toby Dorgan, Alex Hart and Andy Rutland held back the tide of runs and made a quick-fire late cameo from number nine Jerone Burton (42) redundant.
“We were maybe ten to 15 runs shy with the bat but we gave ourselves something to bowl at,” said Hickerton.
“It was close right towards the end. They were winning it at half way and were in charge.
“But our spinners did a great job. Their nine came out and played a few big hits but their guys in the middle order didn’t make enough runs against our spinners.”
Imitaz Ahmad starred with the bat for Trowbridge by making 89 and putting on steady stands with Hart (40) and Hickerton (31).
Luke Morris and Craig Brennan helped the home side’s cause with an aggressive final burst.
In reply, Rutland was the pick of Hickerton’s attack with 5-55 while spin accounted for eight of the nine wickets taken in the innings.
“It was very good,” said the skipper. “We just stuck to our basics and batted, fielded and bowled well. It was the best we have batted this season.”
Trowbridge travel to Keynsham on Saturday.
