Cricket: Westinghouse skipper Steve Hawker is backing his team to climb clear of the Wiltshire Division drop zone, despite their third defeat in four games on Saturday.
Hawker’s side, who were bowled out for just 129, paid the price for another poor batting display as Goatacre coasted to a six-wicket victory to strengthen their promotion push.
But Hawker is not overly concerned that Westinghouse currently sit one place off the bottom of the table and is confident their fortunes will improve in the coming weeks.
He said: “We didn’t bat particularly well, which was disappointing again.
“We chose to bat first and backed ourselves to score some runs but we didn’t do that, and it then put the bowlers under pressure.
“It’s something we’ve got to keep working on.
“It’s another defeat but there’s a long way to go in the season.
“We wouldn’t want to stay down there too long but a couple of wins will take us away from the bottom so there’s no need to panic yet.”
Number eight batsman Sam Dix was the only player to make a serious impression on the scoreboard for Westinghouse, hitting 43 not out as they were bowled out for 129 in 42.1 overs.
Jonathan Wilkins was the pick of the Goatacre bowlers with 5-28 off 13 overs.
In reply, Goatacre reached 130-4 in 29.5 overs to win the match, with Ed Wilkins top scoring on 58.
Westinghouse’s Richard Farmer took 2-25 off six overs.
Westinghouse travel to Marlborough on Saturday and they expect to have Steve and Chris Ferris and John Cleverly back in their side.
“It will be a tough game because they came down from the league above last year,” said Hawker.
“But then there are no easy games in this division, you have to work hard for your wins.”
