Motorsport: Castle Combe Circuit is hoping to set a new world record during a spectacular week of classic car action which is believed to be the first of its kind ever held at a UK circuit.

The aim is to set a new record with more than 200 Ford Capri’s on the popular Wiltshire circuit at one time at the Classic, Retro and Sportscar Action Day on Saturday June 6, which celebrates the 40th birthday of Ford’s iconic classic that sold nearly 2 million from 1969 to 1986.

So far almost 20 Capri owners’ clubs have pledged to bring more than 150 models and with individual owners attending the figure could nearly double that.

Star of the Classic Action Day will be the famous European Championship Cologne Capri owned by Bristol’s Vince Woodman which will lead the lunchtime cavalcade, while organisers hope that Ford will bring the last Capri off the production line to display at the event.

But the Capri faces stiff competition for attention with over 90 owners’ clubs taking part showing an alphabet of classic makes from Alfa Romeo to Vauxhall and Volkswagen, including such rarities as the Honda S800 Club, Riley, and the return of last year’s “Car of the Show” the Austin Cambridge.

The line-up includes the Mazda MX5 Club which celebrates the 20th birthday of the stylish sports car, while the Lotus Register and Lotus Car Club will be out in force showing almost all versions of the Lotus and Caterham-derived Lotus 7.

There will also be a big display of Minis which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, with variants ranging from Minivans to the Riley Elf amongst others.

As with all Castle Combe Action Days clubs and owners can take their cars onto the circuit in regulated sessions for just £35 plus admission tickets.

The circuit is open from 09.00 to 17.00 with the Capri and other displays on track from 12 noon to 13.00.

Admission is £8.00 in advance or £10.00 on the day, with track passes at £30.00 in advance and £35.00 on the day.

-2- The event, now in its 24th year, follows the sell-out success of the April Action Day and headlines the circuit’s first ever Classics Week, which was inspired by the Daytona Speed Week.

Highlights include the Classic Drive-In and an Autojumble on Sunday 7th June at £5 per head, while Wednesday 10th June is reserved for a Classic Track Day for enthusiasts with classic cars - which meet the strict noise limits of 100 dba – to take them out for a regulated track session with other owners for just £170 per car. There will also be special sessions for classic mature drivers.

Thursday 11th June will be Testing for the Classic Carnival race meeting, with free admission to the circuit as drivers prepare for the weekend's meeting which brings the Classic Week to its grand finale with the Rapid Racking Classic Carnival Race Meeting.

This popular event, now in its second year, features an exciting blend of top championships from the Masters Series with the Historic Sports Car Club and is a throwback to the 60's with good classic racing on a classic circuit.
