Cricket: Stand-in skipper Sean Adams has told his Warminster players to stop feeling sorry for themselves and start pulling their weight.

The club suffered a heavy defeat at Thornbury on Saturday and now sit bottom of Premier Division Two without a win in three games.

Opening bat Adams was one of the few to impress with 53 but he fears the team will go nowhere as long as his teammates are happy to settle for second best.

“There’s a lack of drive and character in the batting,” he said. “There’s not enough guts or determination.

“We got off to a flying start and put on 66 for the first wicket, but only three players made double figures and were just giving their wickets away.

“It was a perfect batting track but the batsmen were feeling sorry for themselves.

“We’ve got five or so players who drive the team and the rest just tag along. We need people to want it, and be hungry, but we haven’t batted our allotted overs once this season because we get out stupidly.”

Juvaunie Gayle (127) and Richard Trotman (50) were the difference between the sides with a stand of 139 for the fourth wicket.

John Powell (3-43) and Mark Coxon Tenty (4-79) impressed with the ball for Warminster.

In reply, Adam Fidoe took five wickets for Thornbury and Gayle completed an impressive display with 3-27.

Warminster host Cheltenham this Saturday and could welcome back regular captain Carl Clarke from an ankle injury. “I’m not ready to go back this,” he said. “But I may need to.”
