Cricket: Corsham moved to the top of the Premier Division One table after victory at Glastonbury on Saturday as Pete Dennett’s dream start as captain continued.
The skipper chose to field first with rain clouds looming overhead and was rewarded with a strong performance from his bowling attack.
Corsham opener Steve Snell then blasted the hosts out of the game with a rapid 95 as the visitors finally grabbed a win to go with their previous two win-draws.
“It was a very positive result. I’ve got no complaints,” said Dennett. “After three games the table doesn’t mean a lot but I’d much rather be unbeaten than without a win.
“It was another good team performance. Peter Turner bowled very well and then Steve Snell made his runs at over a 100 per cent strike rate so we knocked the total off quite quickly.”
Dennett asked Glastonbury to bat first on their own track and watched an impressive opening duo put on a 50 partnership.
However Turner then struck to remove dangerman Wes Durston, of Somerset and Wiltshire, for just 29 and a run out then sparked a collapse in the batting order.
Glastonbury fell from 90-1 to 158 all out as Turner finished on 3-47.
In reply, Snell’s display of big-hitting allowed Corsham to reach their target within 36 overs.
Fellow opener Sam Collier made a solid 13 before wicket keeper Steve Bullen (22) and Thomas Hankins (10) finished the job.
“I chose to bowl first because of the weather,” said Dennett. “With the rules the way they are you are always in a better position to control the game if you bat second. Their score was probably worth more like 190 on a Corsham wicket because they have bigger boundaries.
“We know what a good player Wes is but Alex Senneck gave him nothing to work with and kept him on the back foot. “Overall I’m very pleased after the first three weeks. I couldn’t have asked for a lot more. Maybe a couple more wickets to turn those win-draws into wins but I’m really enjoying it.”
