Cricket: Opener Tom Edwards suffered a misfortune on Saturday when dismissed due to an umpiring error but it was not enough to derail his Winsley side who remain unbeaten this season.

Chasing 117 for victory, Edwards started positively, despite the early loss of partner Charlie Holton, and seemed on course to carry his bat. However, calamity struck with the score on 68-2 when Edwards was caught out and was then informed in the changing room it had come off the seventh ball of an over.

“He batted patiently but shouldn’t have been out,” said captain Terry Duffin.

“He didn’t know until we told him when he walked off the pitch. There wasn’t a no-ball in the over but for some reason seven balls were bowled.”

In spite of the aberration, Winsley comfortably reached their total with new signing Mark Williams and in-form batsmen Giles Lunt completing the job.

“Mark looks a good player,” said Duffin. “It’s his second game for us but the first one he has batted in. “We chucked him up the order to see what he could do and I was quite impressed.”

John Spencer starred with the ball for Winsley, taking 5-26, and Duffin attributes that to talent rather than assitance from a seamer-friendly wicket.

“Considering the conditions during the week before when it was raining it wasn’t that bad,” he said. “Had I lost the toss and been asked to bat I don’t think it would have been a train smash.

“It was hard running into the wind, and Simon Orchard and I bowled too many wides, but we put the ball in the right areas.” Winsley visit Potterne on Saturday.
