Cricket: Captain Steve Hawker has warned his Westinghouse batting flops they must improve after a dramatic low-scoring defeat on Saturday.

The heavens opened after Calne’s innings, causing the run target to be reduced to 102 from just 30 overs.

A tense finale meant three runs were needed from the last two balls but Luke Edwards clean-bowled Andrew Inchley with his final delivery to give the home side their first win of the season.

“We put them in and I thought we bowled really well,” said Hawker.

“At the time I thought it was a good total but I fancied us to get the runs.

“Our problem was that we lost wickets at regular intervals. The pitch played fine after the rain but it was just our inability to bat under increasing pressure.

“We were never behind the run rate at any point, we just needed someone to dig in and stay there for a few overs. There were some strange shot selections as well. Batting has not been our strength so far this season.”

Calne captain Chris Downham was the star for his team with a crucial innnings of 68 while Charlie Moss (35) and Craig Edwards (15) also chipped in.

In reply, the visitors struggled in pursuit of the small target with only Hawker (17) and Steve Ferris (14) making over ten runs.

Peter Knight and Luke Edwards starred with the ball for Calne by taking four wickets each.

Westinghouse have now claimed just two batting points from their first three fixtures and Hawker has hinted at changes to halt the decline.

“We have plenty of options and so we may look at a couple of other players,” he said.

“We’ll have to weigh up who’s available but I think we’ll have a couple of new faces in the side.”
