Cricket: Westbury and District narrowly missed out on their second win of the season despite some powerful hitting from West Indian wicketkeeper Romell King.
Whilst King, who struck an impressive 79, was at the crease the game remained in the balance but he eventually succumbed to the dangerous Dwaine Perry.
The Biddestone pace duo of Perry and Naeem Khan claimed four wickets each to seal victory for captain Kris Boulton’s side.
An impressed Boulton said they were the best bowlers in the division.
“I wouldn’t swap those two for any other bowlers in the league.
“And they don’t just take wickets, they keep it tight and don’t go for many runs either.
“To bowl 15 overs for 30 runs and take four wickets is a great performance.”
Both Khan (4-30) and Perry (4-32) bowled straight and quick to leave the Westbury batting card in tatters.
Despite his fellow batsmen perishing all around him Westbury’s wicketkeeper King kept his side in the hunt with 79 runs from 91 balls.
Boulton said until King was dismissed the game remained in the balance.
He said: “While he was in they were going to win, we just needed to take our chance when it came. “Thankfully when it did we held the catch and from there I felt it was going to be difficult for them with their number 10 and 11 batsmen in. “It didn’t quite get to squeaky bum time but it was close.”
Opener Martin Sawyer built the foundation for Biddestone with a robust 57 but Andy Carroll (3-42) and Brannon Varley(3-31) kept the hosts’ scoring in check.
Boulton said: “It was a very good game played in the right spirit by both sides.
“Both teams bowled well and had some good individual performances with the bat.
“Our middle order didn’t really click on Saturday but I’m sure that will come as the season progresses. I am very pleased with our start and this win keeps us at the top of the table.
“On Saturday we play Wootton Bassett who have also won two from two so it should be an exciting game.”
Westbury and District face a tough home game against unbeaten Swindon.
