Cricket: Trowbridge outlined their Premier Division Two promotion credentials on Saturday with a commanding victory against one of the most destructive teams in the division.
New ball pairing of Marcus Brown and Paul Vooght made the most of cloudy conditions by ripping through the Taunton top order and helped skittle out the hosts for a meagre 131 on a traditionally strong batting wicket.
While they lost early wickets in reply, Peter Hickerton played a true captain’s role in his first game in charge of the side and crafted an innings of 70 not out to see the visitors home.
“They are a strong side and it was a very good win for us,” said the skipper.
“Although it was slightly overcast in the morninig, the wicket was good and we thought it would get better during the day.
“We probably expected them to get a few more runs than they did but Marcus and Vooghty put the pressure on and it was a great fielding display as well.”
Toby Dorgan, fielding at gully, set the tone for the day as a whole when he pulled off a fine, one-handed catch to remove opener Jack Cooper early on.
Brown followed this with a superb caught and bowled dismissal in an inspired spell to leave Taunton reeling on 18-5.
Former Somerset batsman James Bryant (68) ensured the score was competitive and, in reply, Trowbridge also stuttered initially to find themselves 11-2.
Hickerton then came to the crease and played a controlled innings, with able supprt from the lower order.
“You didn’t need to score quickly, all that was required was to stay in,” he said.
“We’ve got a bit of momentum now so we have to keep it going.” Trowbridge host Thornbury on Saturday.
