In one of the biggest games in their history, Frome produced an excellent performance to defeat newly crowned league champions Bitton 2-0 in keenly contested match in front of an excellent crowd on Friday.
Following on from Tuesday's win over Sherborne, Frome kept exactly the same team sheet for the match against Bitton, who would have been excused for feeling jaded after their extra time vicory in the Gloucester Cup the previous night, but if they felt tired, it certainly didn't show in their performance and they kept running right to the end.
Frome were the first to show in the 6th minute as Lake rose to head a Gomes cross, with the ball coming off a defender for a corner, but it was Bitton who almost took the lead in the 9th minute as Jones rose to powerfully head the ball past Fey, who then produced a brilliant one handed save diving to his left to deny the tall defender the opening goal.
Bitton clicked into gear shortly after this, and started to dominate the midfield, Zajac got free on the right in the 19th minute but his shot fizzed past the post, and Fey was forced to tip a dangerous long range shot over the bar in the 23rd minute, but possession doesn't always lead to goals, and it was Frome who took the lead against the run of play in the 24th minute.
Allison burst free on the left wing as he dispossessed the full back, ran into the penalty area and as he neared the dead ball line, he produced a low cross shot that deflected off of Rendell into the path of Burke, the ball hitting his shin and ending up low in the corner of the net for his first goal for Frome Town.
Credit should be given to Burke for the ground he made to get into that position as Allison is one of the quickest wingers in the league when in full flight.
Frome increased their lead in the 31st minute as a good passing move allowed Percival to move in on goal and shoot.
In another sign that it could be Frome's night, the shot took a deflection and ran perfectly into Salters path for his first time right foot shot to fly perfectly into the corner of the Bitton net.
Two deflections, two chances, two goals, and Frome again had another slice of good fortune in the 33rd minute as Allison ran through, attempting to get away from Jones who was struggling for pace and attempting to impede the winger by any means.
The linesman immediately flagged for a penalty and as Salter hit the spot kick to the left of the goal, Rendell guessed correctly and produced an excellent save to tip the ball round the post for a corner.
Gomes went close for Frome in the 39th minute as he hit a superb right foot volley that was palmed away by Rendell, and at half time, the Frome supporters hoped that the second half would show that Frome could defend their league against the champions.
The second half proved to be a re-run of the earlier game at Bitton, where the midfields tended to cancel each other out and in a tightly fought half, neither side really dominated or produced clear cut chances on goal.
Bitton had several long range efforts on goal, and Frome's passing produced chances for medium range shots, but in general, the half passed without incident and Frome were happy to take the points that means that as long as Dawlish get a result at Melksham today, then they need one more point from their last game at Dawlish on Bank Holiday Monday to ensure a second place finish and promotion to the Southern League.
Jamie Cheeseman was chosen as Man of the Match by Gerald Butland and Friends (who sponsored the match), and it was a good night for Jamie as he also received all three awards for Supporter's, Manager's and Player's Player of the Year, at the Presentation that was made in the Clubhouse after the match.
