Calne knew they were in for a fight prior in this game due to the visitors fighting for survival in the Toolstation Premier League.

This they did. The game was fast and furious, end to end.

In the opening ten minutes, both teams had forced 3 corners each, but no score.

Both keepers had little work to do as both defences were working well.

The first half continued like this until the 43rd minute when the visitors Jon Bradford put Barnstaple in front.

Five minutes after the break and Calne’s opportunity to level was lost when Ben Moore headed wide.

From the goal kick, route one saw the visitors top scorer, Kevin Squire, latch onto the ball and shoot into the hosts keeper, Jason Grubb, who parried the ball for Squire to head the ball into the net at the second attempt, for the visitors second goal.

Ten minutes later, saw a similar goal from Squire when another route one kick, saw him volley a superb shot to put the visitors ten goals up.

The last 15 minutes saw the Lilywhites start to play football. A Dan King free-kick was headed wide by Russell Lodge. Then a Dan Lardner free-kick hit the bar.

The 80th minute saw some class as veteran defender and reserve player, Simon Gardner, took it on his own to have a go himself when from the back, he ran with the ball through the midfield and defence to score Calne’s first goal.

The Calne players then upped the pressure and fove minutes later, Gary Banks was clumsily tackled and brought down in the box.

From the resultant penalty, Dan Lardner scored Calne’s second.

The hosts then had all the game as Barnstaple were forced to defend in numbers.

Try as they may, Calne could not equalise and Barnstaple took the long journey home with all three points. Just the result the came for.
