Rugby: Melksham travelled to Calne on Saturday looking for another win and they came away with the points after a strong performance.

Melksham CATs started well with two almost identical tries in quick succession from winger Rob Bailey, the second after a good pick-up off his toes.

Calne hit back immediately when following a five metre scrum Calne No 8 Jim Morton picked up to power over near the posts.

The try was promptly converted by Shane McCaferty.

Melksham soon responded though and following several phases the ball was shipped wide for Bailey to gallop in for his hat-trick.

John Cox continued last week’s fine form when he picked up and jinked over under the posts and, with Ponsford kicking the conversion, Melksham went in at half-time 22-7 up.

The second half continued in the same vein when, following a sweet flowing move through the backs, the ball was moved to Scott Cameron who accelerated through a gap to score Melksham’s fifth try.

He then made room for Ben Dudridge running a nice angle for another try and Melksham were looking good.

Calne, to their credit, stuck at it, with their big pack making things hard for the Melksham No 8.

But as soon as the ball went wide Melksham looked like scoring, and were soon on the sheet again.

Dave Dyke continued his good form with another score and, following a good break from Dudridge and Ponsford, Elliot Taylor streaked over for a well deserved try from 30 metres.

Bowsher finished off the scoring with another and Ponsford slotted four more conversions as Melksham ran out easy winners to move level on points with second-placed Chippenham 2nd.
