Chippenham B 56 v Bradford C 7 This was the return match and Chippenham were keen to make this yet another winning result.

As the game progressed Chippenham the home side were pulling away from Bradford C with excellent work around the goal circle by Paula Braddon and Lynn Parry feeding the ball in to the shooters, putting Chippenham in a strong leading position after the first quarter.

The game then carried on with Chippenham’s defence intercepting and retaining the rebounds from the hoop allowing the ball to then quickly be move up the court and into one of the shooters: Maddy Dann or Lisa Morgan who successively scored.

Everyone worked together well to make this Chippenham B’s tenth win out of ten games. Well done to Paula Braddon who was Chippenham’s player of the match.

Westbury 7 v Chippenham 57 Chip got off to a flying start in this return match. They maintained their form throughout the match and were rewarded with a big win. To their credit, Westbury stayed in good spirit and never gave up, even in the final quarter when the game was out of reach. Chip p-o-m went to Sharon Sanders, although it was an excellent team effort.

Holt A 29 v Devizes B 29 Determined to improve on their narrow defeat against Devizes in their first meeting, Holt started the match well and took an early lead. Dev B responded quickly, bringing the score level.

This match developed into a very competitive but friendly match with the teams matching one another’s efforts, Going into the final quarter Dev lead by a solitary goal and a concerted team effort brought about a 4 goal lead. But Holt clawed this back with only a couple of minutes to go.

Either team could have taken the lead but strong defence at both ends cancelled out any opportunities and the result was a well deserved draw, Dev p-o-m went to Lucy Baross for an outstanding match playing out of position at GK instead of WD.

Combe Down 28 v Westbury 28 With only 1 point separating these 2 teams in the \premier League, this match was going to be tough – with both teams out to win. Serious focus on the ball gave Combe a 7-6 lead at ¼ time. Going into the 2nd quarter Combe picked up the pace with both attack and defence working exceptionally well resulting in a 19-11 lead at half-time.

But Westbury came back strongly in the 3rd quarter, particularly in defence and closed the score to 25-21. Going into the final quarter Combe made slight changes to the team attempting to break down the opposition. But Westbury were determined for a result and gradually lessened the gap. With 30 secs to go they equalised. Both teams attacked hard for the deciding goal but time was against them.

Wessex Blades A 33 v Corsham 12 With the knowledge of an earlier win in the season against their opponents, Blades took to the court for a confident start. And by the end of the first quarter they were ahead. In the second and third quarters Blades tried different defence combinations which resulted in many turnovers for them.

This allowed Blades to create some great play involving players throughout the court, resulting in a substantial lead by the end of the third quarter. Blades further upped their work rate in the final quarter to gain as large a goal difference as they could. Blaes p-o-m went to centre court player Glenda Dickson.

Wessex Blades A 42 v Fitzmaurice A 24 Having lost the earlier fixture to Fitz, Blades needed to secure this win to maintain their top of the division position. The first quarter was a nervous affair with passes going astray and players losing possession due to close marking and defensive pressure form Fitz.

Blades settled in the second quarter and showed marked improvement in their play. But Fitz continued to contest everything resulting in only a narrow lead for Blades by half-time of 19-13. The third quarter found the teams matching goal for goal. But Blades were determined not to allow Fitz a single point from this match and finally began to play to their potential in the last quarter and stretched away to win the match comfortably. Blades p-o-m went to Kelly Hearn id defence.

Devizes Jax 9 v Devizes D 51 Due to unfortunate circumstances, the U15 Jax team found themselves with only 6 players available on the night for this match. For the first quarter they played with their usual excellent high spirits, determined to play to their potential. But this was a major uphill battle for the team especially as they had no established defenders on court. The second and third quarters saw the D team produce some excellent shooting which pushed their score on.

The Jax were rewarded by a few goals for their magnificent efforts during this time. By the final quarter the Jax spirits wre at a low ebb but still they rallied to put up a determined fight and produced some of their best netball to date. The Jax are to be congratulated on a fine display of netball when so disadvantaged.

Devizes B 23 v Calne A 30 Second bottom of the Premier League took on second top in this clash. With nothing to lose a relaxed Devizes team produced a fantastic first quarter display with the attack in excellent form resulting in an 8-2 lead. Calne made slight changes and came back hard and fast in the second quarter and quickly closed down the gap.

Devizes responded well to slow down the Calne goal rush and still had a slight lead at half-time, with the attack continuing to produce excellent netball. Devizes made team changes in defence, but still Calne were able to press to their advantage.

Both teams produced turn-overs which they scored from, but Calne managed to maintain their slight lead to win by 7 goals robbing Dev of the chance of a single point. Dev p-o-m was hugely deserved by GA Sadie Brown and an out of position Andrea at C was Calne’s p-o-m.

A Devizes U12 squad of 10 players travelled to Westwood Sports centre in Salisbury on Sunday to take part in the Blue Jays tournament.

Only 6 teams took part in this age group: 2 Newbury teams - Pinehurst, Swindon Lawn, Swindon Swan, Eastleigh.

The format was a round-robin, with play-offs for 5th/6th, 3rd/4th, 1st/2nd.

To their huge credit, Devizes U12’s won 4 out of 5 of their matches to end up 2nd in the table.

They played off for the top place against a very well drilled Swan side. The Devizes girls produced some good netball, playing with determination and excellent teamwork but were unable to convert some of their shooting opportunities and lost the final 1-8.

An excellent tournament result for these girls.

Squad – Laura Holland, Bethany Baross, Emily Buller, Emily Hutchinson, Issy Pitceathly, Jemima Pitceathly, Hannah Butler, Lily Shergold, Megan Taylor, Lauren Wood Two Devizes High Five teams went to the same tournament – one team came 5th and the other came 12th.

Devizes E 20 v Calne C 19 The last meeting of these 2 teams ended in a 40-18 win for Calne. Naturally, this was an eagerly awaited re-match. The first quarter brought a strong start from Devizes;, great work around the attacking circle resulted in a 7-4 lead. By half-time Devizes still held on to a slight lead as a result of good defence from Calne. The third quarter saw both teams tiring with basic errors starting to creep into the game play.

Going into the final quarter Devizes were only 2 goals ahead, both teams aware that it would be a close finish. Calne produced some excellent turn-overs in centre court, leaving Devizes struggling to maintain their lead. Unfortunately, an injury to the Dev centre meant a total change of positions for the team fr the final 3 minutes. Calne began to pull back the goals but the whistle came just in time for Devizes to win the match by 1 goal. P-o-M for Dev was GA Kate Gale and for Calne , their Centre.

Devizes E 23 v Wessex Blades 28 At the start of this match Blades were one position below Devizes E, so a crucial match for both teams. Wessex produced a strong first quarter whilst Devizes struggled to find their rhythm, resulting in a significant lead for Blades at the end of that period.

Devizes produced some excellent teamwork and netball to win the second and third quarters but it was not enough to level the score. Good communication between mid-court and attack allowed Devizes to win the final quarter as well, however the score remained in favour to Blades. Devizes p-o-m again went to GA Kate Gale.

Devizes A 44 v Bradfors A 19 Devizes A were only able to field six of their usual nine players for this return match. The first encounter saw Bradford hold Devizes to a narrow lead for three quarters of the match through grit and determination which had Devizes rattled.

An inspiring team talk by the A’s Captain saw them return to true form and stretch ahead to win well. This time no words were needed as Devizes held a convincing lead from the outset. B squad players Lucy Baross and Sadie Brown stepped up to join the A team, both playing with confidence and skill during their time on court, helping Devizes gain another win in their season. Devizes p-o-m went to GA Claire Sartin who suffered a major ankle injury at the end of the match, with all players wishing her a speedy recovery.

Devizes B 36 v Combe Down 43 A very different Combe Down side to the team that took to the court last encounter meet Devizes last Thursday evening. They made a quick start and were several goals up before Devizes replied. Devizes Centre was shared between Lucy Baross and Sadie Brown whom had already played half a match each for Devizes A squad.

After a couple of minutes the Devizes attack settled into their game, producing effective periods of play with accurate passing leading to plenty of shooting opportunities which were put away by the in-form shooters. Throughout the match Combe maintained a lead but Devizes gradually whittled it down. In the latter half of the match excellent work in the Devizes defence broke down the Combe attack on numerous occasions. These turn-overs allowed Devizes to bring the ball down court and into the circle resulting in further goals. With about 2 minutes to go Devizes were only 5 goals adrift meaning a point was possible. But Combe turned on the pressure, managing to score another couple of goals and the whistle went before Devizes could reply. An excellent team performance from all Devizes players.
