Spin king Liam Dawson became the second youngest wicket taker in England Lions history last Thursday and said he loved every minute of it.

The former Goatacre and Chippenham all-rounder was selected for the Twenty20 loss to New Zealand in New Plymouth after an injury ruled out Kent seamer Robbie Joseph the day before the game.

Dawson, 19, impressed by taking a wicket in his first over but was four days too late to overtake Adil Rashid as the youngest of all time to do so.

“I was really glad to play and it was a good experience,” said Dawson.

“It would have been brilliant to be on the winning side but it was a good atmosphere and I enjoyed it.

“I didn’t even think about breaking a record when I was out there. I just loved every minute of it.”

Dawson’s appearance also made him the fifth youngest player to ever appear for the Lions, England’s A team.

The Hampshire star was brought on to bowl at a precarious time with New Zealand scoring heavily, but he was the second most economical bowler for his side and also took a catch at mid-wicket.

“I didn’t have much to lose really,” he said.

“Twenty20 is a lottery for bowlers and the crowds come to see people bat. I thought I bowled quite well though and to get a wicket in my first over was great.”
