Defender Steve Bush saw red early in the second half as Devizes Town slumped to their eighth straight league defeat with a defeat at home to Brislington on tuesday evening.
The centre back received a second yellow card in bizarre fashion after applauding an offisde decision which went in his favour.
However the assistant referee in question viewed this as dissent and alerted the referee who subsequently ordered him off the pitch.
The controversial incident proved a turning point in the contest with struggling Devizes having matched their in-form visitors until that point.
Just minutes later, the same linesman again infuriated the home side and it's supporters when he allowed a goal to stand despite the striker appearing to be a couple of yards offside when the ball was played to him.
Kieran Baggs, deployed in an unfamiliar striking role, had a good chance to equalise for the Nursteed Road club shortly afterwards but blasted his shot directly at the Brislington keeper.
The loss sees Devizes remain five points adrift of safety with just seven games remaining in the season.
