After weeks of frustration Westbury put together a good performance to beat Wimbourne in a Dorset & Wilts Division One South league fixture on Saturday.
It took only 3 minutes for Westbury to claim the first try. The home side forwards took control and after a series of pick and drives hooker Geoff Wheeler, touched down for the score.
The conversion was missed. 10 minutes later No 8, Matt Church, scored after the Wimbourne pack were shunted back over their own try line from a five metre scrum. Simon Higgins added the conversion.
The last try of the half was scored by veteran centre, Alec Balchin, who pounced on a loose pass by the Wimbourne stand off, showed a good turn of pace and strength to power his way over the line. Sam McQueen kicked the conversion.
The second half saw Wimbourne start well and an attempted kick up field by stand off McQueen was charged down by the visitors inside centre who scooped up the ball and showed a clean pair of heals to score but the conversion was missed.
The score galvanised the home side and with the pressure beginning to tell on Wimbourne they gave away several penalties. It was from one of these that scrum half, Adam Turner, took a quick tap and passed to flanker Rich Hudd, who scored. Higgins again converted.
The next try, which was possibly the best of the day, was scored straight from the restart. The ball was caught and passed to outside centre, Matt Inseal, who from his own 22 metre line set off on a run to the line and seemed to ghost through half of the Wimbourne side to touch down under the posts. McQueen adding the extras.
To be fair to Wimbourne they never gave up and tried to run the ball back at Westbury. At this point in the match the atmosphere became a little fraught and both sides had players in the sin bin.
Ten minutes from time the visitors hooker was red carded for foul play and the match was reduced to uncontested scrums. It was from such a scrum, with Westbury caught napping, Wimbourne managed to finally achieve an unconverted try after the No 8 picked the ball and powered over.
Two Westbury players shared man of the match, Stalwart Prop Paul Adams and youngster Sam McQueen
