While hosting the Berkshire side for the first time, Trowbridge gave the league leaders a real fright before the visitors rescued the game with a penalty in injury time to level the scores and the a try with the last move of the match at Green Lane on Saturday.
They won rather fortunately by the admission of their own supporters.
Boosted by better recent performances Trowbridge began confidently and went ahead in the 2nd minute when quick ball went to full back Chris McLeod who beat the Maidenhead defence on the right to score a try wide out before the visitors full back Alex Cannon reduced the lead with a penalty 4 minutes later.
Trowbridge continued to impress and Ali Lund dropped a goal from just outside the 22 line on 12 minutes.
Then in an excellent move Nicky Little created an opening and gave a perfectly timed pass to release winger Bruce Tasker who outpaced the Maidenhead flyer Scott Harris to score close enough for Lloyd Davis to add the extras to make the score 15-3.
At this stage Trowbridge supporters may have sensed an unlikely win but there was still a long way to go.
Maidenhead were being pressurised into mistakes but they defended well.
They were also threatening in attack and hooker Richard Barber was forced over the line by his forwards for their first try on the half hour.
Trowbridge responded and went further ahead with a Nick Lawes try.
However before the break the visitors scored two tries in quick succession.
Centre Jonny Hammond who had already threatened a couple of times forced his way through a couple of tackles to score with Cannon converting and then Cannon was on the end of a Maidenhead attack after Chris McLeod was caught ion possession and he scored wide out just before the break.
It seemed that these tries may have turned the game but Trowbridge came out in the second half with renewed vigour.
There was no further scoring until the 55th minute when a Trowbridge kick upfield was dropped by Cannon.
In frustration he kicked the ball away after the whistle was blown and Lloyd Davis kicked the resulting penalty from 40 yards out.
Soon after a Trowbridge move involving Michael Johnston resulted in Trowbridge skipper Adam Sullivan forcing his way over and Davis converted.
With 20 minutes to go a win for Trowbridge looked in sight.
Initially Maidenhead were held but Hammond scored a second try and Cannon converted with 10 minutes to go.
Trowbridge then held out under severe pressure but after a missed penalty form Maidenhead, they gained another penalty 3 minutes into injury time which Cannon converted and a full five minutes later the full back went over in the corner to grab the points.
Maidenhead knew they had been in a match and their response at the end and the respect they showed to Trowbridge when they took the kick at goal on the late penalty rather than go for a try illustrated this.
The 30 points Trowbridge scored was the most scored against the Berkshire side this season and they left encouraging Trowbridge to pull out a similar performance out against their Cheltenham rivals when they play them next month.
Trowbridge’s performances in the last month with 3 wins have shown they are a match for anyone in South West 2 and they can look forward with optimism to the rest of the season.
On Saturday they host Walcot in the Bath Combination Cup at Green Lane. The 2nd received a walkover because Wootton Bassett 3rds could not raise a team and the 3rds won 31-12 at Midsomer Norton.
