On Saturday Wootton Bassett made the short trip to Bradford on Avon as they continued their comeback to form with their new-look side.

With all players involved fighting for their place ahead of next weeks important clash with North Dorset there was everything to play for.

From the off Bassett were constantly applying pressure on the home side and eventually this told as from a scrum number nine Craig Iles darted down the blind side to score. Bassett came straight back and scored immediately after with prop Gary Williamson charging a kick down then releasing winger Grant Murdoch who raced away under the posts to extend the lead to 12-0.

Shortly after Bradford were able to get themselves on the score sheet from a five meter scrum as the number eight broke then released the open side flanker who scored unopposed under the sticks to reduce the deficit to 12-7.

However this was the last action we saw in the Bassett 22 as normality was restored as fly half Duncan Fulling scored two identical tries in quick succession both involved a nice little show and go and both were converted as the teams turned around at half time with Bassett leading 26-7.

In the second half the wind really picked up as did Bassett’s performance.

The forwards were rucking and carrying hard which really put the backs on the front foot as they started to run riot. Winger Grant Murdoch was slicing through the defence at will and he grabbed is second of the day as some quick handling a nice offloading put him into some space to score out wide to increase the score to 31-7.

The next try came from youngster Will Corry.

Alex Penny broke from the base of the scrum beat the initial defence and offloaded nicely to Will who shrugged off the defence to power over the line for his first try for the club 36-7.

The next three tries astonishingly all came from Duncan Fulling as he made his tally for the match a staggering five. He was a class apart all day and showed excellent foot work and strength in all his scores as Bassett ran riot and increased the lead to 51-7.

It was then left to second row Ian Mason to put the icing on the cake as he crashed over in typical fashion after a blind side move.

This finished the game at 56-7 which could have been a lot more if the weather conditions had favoured the kickers.

However it was encouraging to see Bassett’s young side starting to pick up momentum as the right time in the season.
