Chippenham pentathlete Lucy Boggis has set herself a target of reaching next year’s Commonwealth Games and says appearing on Gladiators helped to save her career.
The 20-year-old was known as Tempest on the Sky re-incarnation of the popular 90s television show last year, at a time when her athletics career was interrupted by injury.
Boggis has since got back to her best form and smashed her personal best in winning an individual silver for Great Britain in an international against Spain and France at the weekend.
“Training for the show certainly helped strengthen areas of the my body I wouldn’t normally use,” she said.
“I mean, swinging around in mid-air is bound to be good for your shoulders isn’t it?
“It was an alternative to my normal training and proved to be really good rehab when there was nothing else I was able to do.
“Since then I’ve been seven months without injuries and able to train properly which has helped put me back on the right path.”
Boggis was the youngest Great Britain athlete at the Under 23 international in Cardiff but captained her side to victory.
She achieved individual personal bests in long jump, shot put and 800 metres, narrowly missing out on two more in the 110m hurdles and the high jump.
Her overall score of 3,940 also ranks her 10th on an all-time list for the age bracket.
“I hope to make the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year,” she said.
