Tackling Bradford’s speedy runners out of the game, Minety kept a clean sheet defensively while scoring a try and a penalty goal to clinch this keenly contested local derby.

Fielding something approaching a first-choice line-up for the first time in several weeks, Minety proved more than a handful for their opponents and carved out a territorial advantage in the first half despite playing up the slope.

A 50-metre sprint by scrumhalf Max Sparrow looked certain to lead to a score until a last-ditch tackle from Bradford brought him down short of the line. Other promising moves by Minety came close and had they opted to try for goal when awarded two very kickable penalties in their opponents’ 22, they might well have gained a first half lead. Bradford had a long-range penalty goal attempt just before half-time but the kick missed and the score remained nil-all.

As injuries took their toll, Minety were grateful for their reserves. Andy Edwards left the second team match to come on for the firsts only to sustain a cut to the face which forced him to withdraw after a few minutes. Mark Holdsworth, who had come to watch, was dragged out of retirement and played a fine second half at flanker.

Minety turned up the heat after the break, forcing their way down into the Bradford 22. An initial foray on the right ran into opposition but the ball was swiftly recycled and flung left down the threequarter line. Taking the final pass, skipper Martin Coe beat the defence to the corner flag and touched down for a try.

Minety continued to press from the restart and this time, when they were awarded a penalty, they opted to go for goal. Centre Jack Ward slotted the kick to give Minety a margin of more than a converted try.

Bradford responded by running the ball every opportunity they had. Their backs were fast and passed well and a breakaway try seemed possible at any time. But Minety held their nerve and held their line and the visitors could find no way through. The whole side tackled well but hooker Angelo Broadhurst was particularly notable for his fine defensive work Minety will want to retain this form as they travel to play Corsham this Saturday.
