Calne Town 2, Welton Rovers 2 (AET)
Calne won 4-3 on penalties
Goalkeeper Jason Grubb was the hero as Calne marched into the semi finals of the Wiltshire Cup at the expense of Welton Rovers.
Midfielder Ben Fitch put the home side ahead on the stroke of half-time but his strike was cancelled out in the second period taking the game to extra time.
Striker Glenn Armstrong thought he has put his side through when he scored soon after but after Welton fought back and equalised before the end of the first 15 minutes.
In the final quarter of an hour, neither side looked likely to make a decisive breakthrough as lethargy set in as the tie went to a nail-biting penalty shoot out.
Both sides missed early on, with Darren Smart being the unfortunate man to do so for the home side, but Armstrong, Mark Bowman, Ryan Pratley and James Lye all converted.
With the shoot out delicately poised at 4-3, Grubb guessed correctly and palmed away the final spot kick to send his side through to the last four of the competition.
“With a bit of luck, hopefully we can go all the way now,” said Armstrong.
“I was here in 2004 when we lost in the final on penalties so it would be good to erase that memory.”
Calne travel to league leaders Bideford in the Toolstation Premier Division on Saturday.
