Trowbridge boxing prospect Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell steps into the ring for the last time as an amateur on Saturday and is already targeting success on the professional circuit.
The middleweight will put his spotless record of 14 wins and no losses on the line on Saturday night when he takes on Birmingham’s Stewart Tordoff at the Trowbridge Civic Hall.
While keen not to overlook his opponent, Blackwell is anxious to move on to bigger and better things.
“I’ve signed with a promoter in Birmingham and will be speaking to him next week to finalise things,” said the 18-year-old, of Rutland Crescent.
“Hopefully within two months I’ll have my first pro fight and he wants me to compete at least ten times over the next year.
“In the next 18 months or so the plan is more I want to be undefeated and around 15-0.
“I want to make it at as high a level as I can and have a lot of confidence in my own ability.”
Blackwell trains at the Contender Gym in Trowbridge, run by former professional boxer Mark Kent.
Remarkably he only took up the sport at and had previously planned a career as a professional footballer.
“I used to play for Trowbridge Town as a goalkeeper and had trials for Cardiff City,” said Blackwell.
“I only started two years ago but I do tend to learn things quite quickly.
“Most of my family are good at sport and my half-cousin Chris Stoeks is a defender at Bolton Wanderers and captain of England U18.
“My little brother Dan also plays in goal but he’s always followed me and he has also started boxing recently and is pretty good too.”
Blackwell and Tordoff have met before when sparring over eight years ago.
He says he is a better fighter now in all departments and is ready to mark his farewell amateur fight with a bang. “I’m quicker on my feet, have a harder chin and hit with more power,” he said.
“I’m ready for this.”
The doors open at 7.30pm on Saturday night. For tickets call 07971 730231.
