Swindon Town U18s players Owen Foye and Lucas Myers reflected on their long-term goals and ambitions following victory in the FA Youth Cup.
The young Robins got to a winning start in the first round with a 3-1 win over Newport County in front of over 400 supporters at the Nigel Eady County Ground.
Defensive midfielder Foye claimed that a man of the match performance was key in the tie to making appearances in the first team ahead of a Bristol Street Motors game next week.
He said: “I thought I’ve done pretty well, got my body behind the ball and made some crucial tackles and passes.”
“I thought to myself, if there is a game to impress, this is it.
“I think I’ve done my part to impress the first team coaches.”
Having been around the academy set-up for a long period, he briefly discussed his journey and how ‘surreal’ it is playing in front of a big crowd.
“I’ve been here since I was seven so I’ve been here for almost ten years now, this is my boyhood club.
“I’ve been watching Swindon since I was four, so it’s quite a surreal moment to play in front of some fans at the County Ground.”
Goalkeeper Myers kept the score at 3-1 in stoppage time with a strong save from the spot, and the penalty-hero discussed working with Redman Evans and how its helped him progress with the aim to earn a professional contract.
“I worked a lot with Redman, especially last year with the FA Youth Cup run and I was on the bench quite a bit; I know him quite well.
“He’s a massive role model to me, so I want to follow his footsteps, especially in the Youth Cup.”
Town coaching staff and players watched on Tuesday, with Ian Holloway and Marcus Bignot pictured in attendance.
With the aim to display ability to important role models, Myers discussed the added pressure with such important figures in the crowd.
He stated: “Obviously again, it’s pressure, but we’ve got to learn to live with that and I think we dealt with that quite well.
“Especially seeing them after the game, they had good words for us and encouraging us boys, saying well done and stuff.
"It’s just nice to see and hear.”
