Swindon Town fans were split over whether Ian Holloway was the correct appointment as the club’s latest manager following Mark Kennedy’s departure.

In a busy morning at The Nigel Eady County Ground, the club relieved Kennedy of his duties after just 13 games in charge having won just twice, with the news quickly followed that experienced manager Holloway would replace him.

The 61-year-old is just 11 games short of 1,000 in senior management, having previously been in charge of clubs such as Blackpool and Crystal Palace, although he has been out of work since resigning from Grimsby Town in 2020.

Fans were generally in two minds over the appointment, with many excited about his potential to provide a lift to a club struggling towards the bottom of League Two but others concerned by his more recent record and time out of the game.

Bilko said on X: “Happy with that let’s hope the team get galvanised and go on a winning run starting tomorrow.”

Bradley Red 1 added in the Adver comments: “One thing this guy will bring is passion, he won't back down and will shout and wave his arms if things are failing. I like him and I do hope he can be the man to get this club promotion, the last throw of the dice for the owner.”

But there were those who were not quite as sure that the swift action would end up being the right one, with Holloway’s previous record including many ups and downs.

Paul D said on X: “If you're going to be balanced, should probably include the three relegations on the infographic as well.”

Wearedoomed's response reflected their username in the Adver comments: “He hasn't managed a club for four years. How up-to-date is he and wonder if there was a football reason for no one employing him? I have to admit I don't feel good about this appointment. Feels like we have got a footie dinosaur on our hands.”

SwindonSwindled added: “Considering this appointment could be the difference between staying in the league and relegation to the national league this feels incredibly rushed, and a really poor choice.”

Despite his appointment ahead of the game against Gillingham, the Holloway era will begin in the FA Cup against Colchester United on home turf next weekend, with the current coaching staff of Marcus Bignot, Gavin Gunning, and Steve Mildenhall taking charge this Saturday.
