George Cox said that he expects that to be his first of many goals for Swindon Town as he netted his first in English football against Cheltenham Town.

The former FC Volendam man got Swindon off the mark with a fine volley before setting up Will Wright from a free kick and then putting in the cross that led to Joel McGregor’s first professional goal before George Miller and Ethon Archer attempted to mount a comeback.

It was Cox’s first goal since scoring for Fortuna Sittard against FC Utrecht in December 2021 during a 2-2 draw.

Cox said that he has been threatening to score in recent weeks and believes that with the way Swindon play, he should pop up with goals from wing-back.

He said: “I spoke with Marcus [Bignot] after the game and he said that was two I have gone really close with.

“He also said it was a credit to me that I am getting in the right positions and making it a problem but today I have actually put it in the goal, so I am really happy.

“I think it is really important [to make those runs into the box] and it can be a threat for us.

“When I am crossing Joel McGregor will come in on the back stick, so I should be hoping to get quite a few goals doing that this season.

“Since my daughter was born, and she was two last week, I haven’t scored, so it was really nice to get on the scoresheet today because it had been a while and hopefully I can kick on and get a few more.”

Cox was also notable in the game for having ditched the long-hair which he had had during his first few weeks as a Town player because he said he wanted to be known for his footballing ability first.

He said: “It was during the last game, about four or five people said ‘You have got beautiful hair’ and I thought I would rather they said I had beautiful crossing or something, not hair.

“It was also a bit annoying, I found myself flicking it behind my ears too much in the last couple of games, so I had to give it the chop.

“[It was] not even [a superstition to score after it] I just felt like I needed a change with the hair, I had had enough of the maintenance of the long hair.”
