Swindon Town ended their unwanted 13-match winless streak in the cups with a 4-0 mauling of Bristol City in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

A brace from captain Paul Glatzel after 12 minutes saw them race into a fast start before homegrown duo Joel McGregor and Botan Ameen scored their first professional goals to make it a fine evening in SN1.

So, how did the players fare as individuals at The Nigel Eady County Ground?

GK: Dan Barden – 6

I am going to have to go back to that same well, but does anyone have a clear picture of how good Barden is? It is probably a positive that having conceded just once in his last three games that it has been tough to figure out his capabilities completely as it means he has not been worked. His kicking was more accurate in this one, even if he was aiming at smaller targets.

RCB: Tunmise Sobowale – 7

Sobowale is playing very well right now, his role as the Kyle Walker in a Gareth Southgate back three suits him very nicely to chase in behind and he has also been very strong with the ball. He got McGregor into good areas quickly and often.

CB: Harrison Minturn – 6

Such was the control of Swindon in this game that despite Rovers having more of the ball, Town were always in control. Minturn was not called into action too much but was in the right place when needed and made it so Promise Omochere had almost no impact.

LCB: Miguel Freckleton – 7

Playing against his boyhood club, it was good to see Freckleton have a get-right game. Gatlin O’Donkor did try and get at him a few times early on but the Sheffield United loanee used his strength and speed to good effect to get the better of him before the striker had to come off.

RWB: Joel McGregor – 8

It shouldn’t matter whether Jeff King is fit at the moment as McGregor has been terrific. His goal was a carbon copy of the shot Glatzel blocked at the weekend and his energy really set the tone for the whole team. Defensively his positioning can improve (he was a winger until last year) but he always gets back with tenacity to make up for that.

CM: Nnamdi Ofoborh – 7

Ofoborh was nominally one of the more advanced midfielders but he stuck more to what he was good at and was getting really stuck in. With the ball, he was effective in playing quickly to McGregor or Sean McGurk and without it, Rovers definitely knew he was there.

CDM: Gavin Kilkenny – 8

After a few down displays, Kilkenny was excellent again. As if spurred on by Ofoborh, he was snapping into tackles and spraying passes around to get everyone into dangerous areas.

CM: Sean McGurk – 8

When McGurk is on it, he is really on it and he thrived again last night. No defender could ever find him and he made the most of it, showing off his passing range in picking up two assists and could and probably should have had a goal to show for it too.

LWB: Jake Cain – 7

A truly fabulous cross from Cain for the second goal, Glatzel and he understand one another so well and it is great to watch them play. That moment showed the benefits of the system when you play the right cross at the right time.

ST: Paul Glatzel – 9

It felt like watching Glatzel at the start of pre-season when he captained the side a lot and led by example. He had a slightly freer role with Ameen on the last man and he was terrific in all aspects and clearly got the all-important goals to mark that.

ST: Botan Ameen – 9

Special. Watching his progression for the under-18s last season was a very fun experience and it was always a matter of time until he got the chance and the step was the perfect size for him. His boundless energy upset The Gas constantly, he was exciting with the ball at his feet, and clinical when his chance came.

Substitutes:

Dylan Mitchell – 5

This game played out exactly like Newport County with the second half becoming a non-event. Mitchell showed flashes of energy and skill but there was not a lot to do.

Miles Obodo – 6

He made one run into the channel during the second half, leaving a defender for dead and then drilled a shot at goal which forced the goalkeeper to parry it which was very impressive. He has the tools to be a success but might need a loan at some point to show it with Ameen ahead of him now.

Rosaire Longelo – 5

Defensively he came on and did a good job of blocking any chance of the visitors getting a goal. However, he had limited opportunities to showcase his attacking craft.

Dani Gonzalez – 6

Even in the precession that the second half became, Gonzalez displayed some exciting flashes of skill. I am not just saying this because I want a first-team player called Gonzalez but he looked tricky off the dribble and played a few delightful passes.

Grant Hall – 5

It was good to see him get 20 minutes at the end to build towards some involvement at the weekend. He was not forced into much but there was a moment when he challenged for a header and you could tell the difference between him and everyone else on that pitch.
