Swindon Town have been taking a closer look at Wales international Declan John for the past month as he has been on trial with the club.

John has been without a club since May after leaving Bolton Wanderers following a three-year stay at the Toughsheet Community Stadium in which he made 58 appearances under Ian Evatt in League One before having a six-month spell at Salford City last season.

The 29-year-old is one of two players currently known to be looking to earn a deal at the Nigel Eady County Ground, with former Cheltenham Town man James Olayinka also on trial with Swindon.

Having played for both Cardiff City and Swansea City, as well as playing for Rangers and other Football League sides, he has earned seven caps playing for Wales, playing alongside former Town players Lloyd Isgrove and Hal Robson Kanu for the national side and against players like Arjen Robben, Luis Suarez, and Rodri.

When asked about his time with the club so far, Mark Kennedy said that he was a player he was very keen on.

He said: “All of it is true apart from trialist of the week because he has been with us for about a month.

“He is a really good player and I don’t know how he has not got a club, I don’t know the why because I have not gotten into that.

“Dec has been with us for about a month now and has done really well.

“He is a really good player, we really like him, he lives locally, and we have given him an opportunity for him to train and get fit.

“If something presents itself going forward then he is somebody that we would like to talk to and I know that we are a club that he wants to play for, hence why he has been here for so long.

“He is here on merit, he is here because we like him, he likes coming here, will we get something done? I don’t know.”

It was revealed following four late additions in the summer window that the transfer budget had been increased late on to help get those players in.

With Swindon evidently interested in making additions to the squad with John and Olayinka being part of the group in training, Kennedy was asked about what capability the club had to make additions following the transfer window.

He said: “A huge thank you to Clem [Morfuni] and the board for what they have done because they have gone above and beyond with what they have done.

“I don’t constantly knock on the door and ask for something, I never ask for anything but if I am offered something then I happily accept, as long as it is for the right reasons and for the good of the squad and the club.

“Clem has gone way above and beyond on doing that, our budget has been maximised, so I am not knocking on his door and saying ‘Can we sign Declan?’ or anything like that.”
