Gary Horgan felt that everything could have gone wrong did go wrong for Chippenham Town as they crashed out of the FA Cup 4-1 against Hungerford Town.
The Crusaders took the lead just after the half hour mark, after the Bluebirds had missed a flurry of early chances, when a long throw was hurled in by Nathan Davis which flicked off the top of Luke Spokes’ head at the near post and beyond Will Henry into the back of the net.
After the break Hungerford doubled their advantage after a defensive mix-up allowed Elis Watts to flick the ball into an unguarded net.
Chippenham had a glimmer of hope with ten minutes remaining when substitute Caine Bradbury received the ball on the edge of the area and sent an arrowing low drive into the bottom corner.
Owen Windsor was caught in possession on the halfway and then Sean Moore beat Will Henry to the loose ball and finished to make it three.
The Crusader’s progression to the next round was guaranteed in stoppage time when Slavi Spasov played in Watts to curl into the far corner of the net.
Horgan felt that a series of events throughout the afternoon contributed to a disappointing early exit from the FA Cup for his side.
He said: “I think that sometimes you have to concede that it is not your day, we couldn’t quite put our finger on it, but what could go wrong did go wrong.
“We had a road closure which meant we had players arrive late, then we had an injury five minutes before kick-off which meant we had a late change to the team, and then we had an injury in the first half that meant we were two substitutes down.
“They scored a long throw which we had to defend because they were given a corner that was not a corner, but ultimately, we just weren’t good enough on the day.
“It is hugely disappointing because at the start of the season one of the things we wanted was a good FA Cup run.
“We have been lucky enough in the last four or five years that we have progressed into the first and second round proper.
“It was a really good opportunity for the club to get some decent exposure and obviously make some money, so it is disappointing from that aspect, but we need to move on quickly.”
